The Department of Teacher Education (DTE), National Institute of Education (NIE), is a department of NCERT, New Delhi dedicated to advancing the quality of teacher education in India. It plays a pivotal role in the conceptualization, design, and implementation of both pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes in alignment with national policies and curricular frameworks.

The Department undertakes research and material production to strengthen teacher preparation and professional development. It provides academic leadership and support to centrally sponsored teacher education institutions such as DIETs, SCERTs, CTEs, and IASEs, contributing to systemic capacity building at national, state, and district levels.

The Department is actively engaged in promoting innovations in pedagogy, assessment, inclusive education, digital learning, and school–teacher education integration. It also organizes national and regional extension programmes, workshops, and professional development initiatives for teachers, teacher educators, and educational administrators. Through its work, the Department of Teacher Education, NIE–NCERT, serves as a key driver of quality, equity, and excellence in teacher education, supporting the realization of India’s educational goals under NEP 2020.

Role and Functions of the Department of Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education functions as a national academic, professional, and policy support institution, providing leadership in teacher preparation, professional development, research, and innovation to ensure quality, equity, inclusion, and excellence in school education in alignment with NCERT frameworks and NEP 2020.

  • To provide academic and technical support to the Ministry of Education and State/UT Governments in the formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of teacher education policies, programmes, and Centrally Sponsored Schemes.
  • To review pre-service and in-service teacher education curricula aligned with NCTE frameworks, NEP 2020, NCF 2023, and emerging educational needs.
  • To function as a think tank by conceptualizing innovative models for teacher education, including pre-service, in-service, continuing, and lifelong professional development.
  • To design and conduct in-service, continuing, and lifelong learning programmes for teachers, teacher educators, school leaders, master trainers, and key resource persons using blended, digital, and ICT-enabled modes, including EDUSAT and other platforms.
  • To undertake policy research, interdisciplinary studies, evaluative research, and comparative studies on key issues in teacher education such as curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, practice teaching, and school/professional experience programmes, and to promote innovation and best practices.
  • To mentor and support SCERTs, SIEs and DIETs in developing as autonomous, academically robust institutions addressing all aspects of school education and teacher education at the state and regional levels.
  • To develop and disseminate teacher education materials, modules, and resources aligned with national curriculum frameworks, contemporary pedagogical approaches, and inclusive education principles.
  • To support inclusive education, learner diversity, well-being, values, ethics, constitutional principles, and holistic development through teacher preparation and professional development.
  • To leverage ICT, digital platforms, and emerging technologies to enhance access, equity, quality, effectiveness, and scalability in teacher education.
  • To support monitoring, evaluation, accreditation, and quality assurance mechanisms for teacher education programmes, institutions, and professional development initiatives.
